Gail P. Criste, 73, Altoona, formerly of Sidney, N.Y., died unexpectedly Sunday after a short battle with cancer.
She was born in Pulaski, N.Y., daughter of the late Frederick and Elsie (Waite) Stewart. She married Melvin V. "Ron" Criste Jr. in 1980 in Winchester, Va., and he preceded her in death on April 27, 2003.
Surviving are two daughters: Lorlinda "Lori" Shumway and husband, Lynn, of Oneonta, N.Y., and Lynnette Barnes and husband, William, of Mount Upton, N.Y.; five grandchildren: Joshua, Jonathan and Katie Marie Shumway and James and Sean Dewey; a great-grandson, Wyatt Dewey; a brother, Roger Stewart and wife, Kathy, of Unadilla, N.Y.; a sister, Sandy Reynolds and husband, Tom, of Sidney, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Joyce Soult and husband, Bob; several nieces and nephews; and good friends, Missy Grossman and family.
Gail retired as a supervisor from Warnaco Sportswear and previously had worked at Proctor Silex. She enjoyed traveling after her retirement. She was known as Grandma Gail to neighborhood children.
Friends will be received from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona. A committal service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 9, 2013, at Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum.
