Bertie Jane Garman, 85, formerly of Bellwood, went home to be with the Lord Saturday evening at Valley View Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born in Grazierville, daughter of the late John and Carrie (Harshbarger) Detwiler. She was twice married, first to Harold Leonard, who died May 30, 1988. She then married Floyd D. "Pie" Garman on July 2, 1994, and he died Oct. 16, 2013.
Surviving are two stepdaughters: Joyce M. (Gregory) Donnelly of Altoona and Nancy L. (Kenneth) Burcham of Greenwood, Ind.; 10 step-grandchildren; 27 step-great-grandchildren; four step-great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Earl (Verna) Detwiler of Woodland; four sisters: Peggy Sprankle of Tyrone, Marcella Cady in North Carolina, Sally (George) Biddle of Warriors Mark and Kaye (Steve) Vaughn of Tyrone; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by four brothers: Gary, John, her twin Bernard, and Chalmer Detwiler; and a sister, Faye Sigel.
Bertie attended Moody Bible Institute, Chicago, Ill. She was a homemaker and a member of Riggles Gap Bible Church. She loved music, and she enjoyed singing in church and various nursing homes.
Friends will be received from 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service Friday, Nov. 29, 2013, at Riggles Gap Bible Church, Pastor William Ice officiating. Interment will be at Erwin Memorial Cemetery, Erwin, N.C.
The family suggests that contributions in Bertie's memory be made to Riggles Gap Bible Church.
