Rita Marie Hines, 88, Cresson, died Tuesday peacefully at home surrounded by her family.
She was born in Lilly, daughter of the late Jerry and Grace (Gonsman) Lee. She married Lambert A. Hines on Sept. 19, 1945, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 8, 1996.
Surviving are six children: Theresa Hines of Altoona, Barbara Reck (Dick Smith) of Huntingdon, Kyran Harper of Cresson, Beverly Lafferty (Chet) of Altoona, Lynette Grager (Hank) of Altoona and Andrea Gigliotti (Jim) of Cresson; three grandchildren: Rhonda Seymour (Cory), Kelsey Renz (Mike) and Willie Lafferty, all of Altoona; and her devoted caregiver, Maryann Clossin of Altoona. She is also survived by her dog, Buddy, who was always with her.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Rhonda C. Himes; a granddaughter, Kendra Grager; a great-grandson, Brendan Seymour; a sister, Bernadine McCloskey; and her cousin/sister, Pauline "Sis" Lee.
Rita was employed at the Cresson tuberculosis sanitarium prior to her marriage. While raising her seven girls, she worked as an Avon lady for 35 years and later in life worked at Green Thumb. She was a Girl Scout leader, as well as a caretaker to many in the Cresson area. She also worked at the Cresson Township Water Department prior to her retirement.
She was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Cresson, and she was a devout Catholic, dedicated to her religion. She loved to bake and garden, canning her produce. She will be missed.
Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013, at Charles M. Kennedy Funeral Home, Cresson, where a vigil for the deceased will be held at 3 p.m., followed by Legion of Mary rosary. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 18, 2013, at St. Aloysius Church by the Very Rev. John D. Byrnes. Committal will be in the church cemetery.
