Joseph T. Zajac, 84, Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidaysburg, formerly of 36 Greenwood Road, Altoona, died Wednesday evening at the home after a brief illness.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Anthony and Dorothy (Kurezak) Zajac. He married Dorothy Naomi Sager on June 26, 1947, at St. Mark's Catholic Church, Altoona, and she died Nov. 15, 2012.
Surviving are five children: Julie Thaler of Gallitzin, Dr. Thomas E. and wife, Mary, of Altoona, Linda Tang and husband, Ming, of Williamsburg, Va., Alan J. and wife, Dona, of Highland, N.Y., and Anita McClellan of Altoona; six grandchildren: Matthew Thaler, Dr. Jonathan Thaler, Jessica Haritos, Brian and Marc Zajac and Athena Tang; four step-grandchildren: Eric Chamberlain, Autumn Keenan, Dr. Marlena Tang and Marc Tang; three great-grandchildren: Lianna, Brett and Alex Thaler; and three step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by eight siblings and was the last of his immediate family.
Joseph retired in 1991 as a machinist at Veeder-Root Co., Altoona, with 30 years of service, and he had previously worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad. He was a member of St. Mark's Catholic Church, Altoona, and he was a loving father and devoted husband.
Friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Nov. 8, 2013, at Jones Funeral Home, where a vigil for the deceased will be celebrated at 4:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, at St. Mark's Catholic Church, Altoona, Father Ronald V. Osinski officiating. Committal rites will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.
