James P. Eckenrode, 63, Cresson, died Thursday at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.
He was born in Colver, son of Edna (Trexler) Eckenrode and the late Harold Eckenrode.
Surviving are his mother of Loretto; his wife, Joyce (Hertzog); five daughters: Lisa Brown (Thomas) of Cresson, Shari Buck (Thomas) of Morrisdale, Wendy Eckenrode of Hummelstown, Barbara Filo (Marcus) of Charlotte, N.C., and Carrie Martynuska (Daniel) of Lilly; and 11 grandchildren: Taylor, Derek, Alyssa, Tommy, Jordan, Alexandra, Landon, Kyle, Trevor, Jacob and Zachary.
He is also survived by nine siblings: Edward in Maryland, Robert of Cresson, Richard of Loretto, Donald of Cresson, Linda Lamar of Chambersburg, Susan Zentack of Cresson, William of Cresson, Floyd of Loretto and Martha Link of Cresson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Michael; and his first wife, Luanne (Miller).
James was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam era. He was formerly employed as a coal miner and was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Cresson, Loretto American Legion, Sankertown VFW and Sokol's Club, Lilly. He enjoyed hanging out with his second family at camp, hunting, fishing and playing cards.
Friends will be received from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013, at Charles M. Kennedy Funeral Home, Cresson, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 4, 2013, at St. Francis Xavier Church, the Rev. Leo F. Arnone as celebrant. Committal will be in St. Michael's Cemetery, Loretto. Military graveside rites will be accorded by Loretto American Legion, Sankertown VFW and other local veteran organizations.
