Hollidaysburg wasn't the lowest qualifier for the WPIAL Class AAA playoffs, but the Golden Tigers came out of Monday's football playoff meeting at the DoubleTree Hotel in Green Tree with the lowest seed.
Consequently, the Tigers will face the No. 1 seed for the second straight year in the first round of the playoffs that open Friday. This season, it will be against West Allegheny.
Kickoff for the contest in Imperial will be at 7:30.
West Allegheny, the 2012 District 7 champion, edged out Thomas Jefferson for the top seed. Had Hollidaysburg drawn TJ, it would have been a rematch from last year's playoffs and the fourth time the teams had squared off in two years; the Jaguars open things by hosting Hampton, which Hollidaysburg had beaten and lost to the Tigers on a tiebreaker for fifth place in the Greater Allegheny Conference.
West Allegheny is 9-0 and has outscored its opponents 371-95 playing in the Parkway Conference. If Hollidaysburg would pull off the upset, it would get the winner of the Indiana-Ringgold game.
Franklin Regional was the highest seed from the Greater Allegheny Conference, netting the fourth spot.
Upper St. Clair, Aliquippa and Sto-Rox were the top seeds in the other classifications. Undefeated McKeesport, which competed against Altoona in the Foothills Conference, was seeded third behind USC and Pittsburgh Central Catholic.
The WPIAL championships will be played Nov. 23 at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.
