HERSHEY - After earning its fifth straight District 6 Class AAA championship and undefeated regular season, the Hollidaysburg Area High School girls tennis team advanced to its fourth PIAA quarterfinal match in five years.
The Lady Tigers fell in the quarterfinals again, 5-0, to West Chester Henderson of District 1 at the Hershey Racquet Club on Friday.
Hollidaysburg had not managed to win a single set in its previous four PIAA matches, but senior Marissa Lanzel won the second of three sets in her match before falling, 6-3, 4-6, 10-5.
Lanzel is the lone senior graduating from the squad, which will look to build on its continued success.
"This was the first time in states we've taken a set in an individual match," Hollidaysburg coach Brian Denis said. "She is the District 6 singles champion that has undoubtedly been our captain and will leave a huge void, but we have everyone else coming back."
The doubles team of Alyssa Pheasant and Elyse Smilnak was also able to win the middle set of its match, before falling, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.
The Lady Tigers finished its fifth straight undefeated regular season, at 19-0, to extend its regular season unbeaten streak to 83 games.
"It was a phenomenal year and probably our best season ever," Denis said. "We graduated a lot of talent last year. We have a close, tight-knit group that has been very successful record-wise but has also been a pleasure to work with."
