The PIAA District 6 Class AA girls soccer playoffs began Tuesday, and the Tyrone Area High School Lady Golden Eagles opened with an impressive 5-2 victory over Bishop Carroll in the late game at Mansion Park.
The win was the first playoff victory in the history of the girls soccer program.
Things started off ominously for the Lady Eagles, with a goal by Paisley Zatek for Bishop Carroll, just two minutes into the game.
But things changed dramatically after that.
Tyrone's Marissa Panasiti scored two consecutive goals, one at the 35:55 mark and again at the 19:42 mark.
Carrie D'andrea scored a goal that was assisted by Zatek with 9:34 left in the first half to even the match at 2. However, Tyrone's Carrie Vance made it a 3-2 Lady Eagles lead at the half.
"It was an exciting game," Tyrone coach Bruce Makin said. "We started off a little slow. We allowed an early goal in the first five minutes. But the girls rallied after that."
The Lady Eagles defense pitched a shutout in the second half, while Tyrone got goals from Vance and Audrey Bowser.
"I thought we came out and played a good game," Bishop Carroll coach Chris Rozinsky said.
In the final minute-plus of the first half, the Huskies' junior goalkeeper, Jaime Witham, made a pair of incredible saves, keeping it at 3-2 game.
"Jaime started playing goalie for us a year ago," Rozinsky said. "She has worked a lot on her own in the offseason. She was remarkable for us tonight."
Tyrone advances to the next round of the playoffs, playing at top-seeded Somerset on Thursday.
In spite of the season ending for the Huskies, Rozinsky was proud of what his team achieved.
"I'm very proud of my team for making the playoffs," Rozinsky said. "It's a big improvement over the past few years. I'm proud of where we're at right now."
