Elwood Sanford Rhodes, 82, rural New Enterprise, formerly of rural Martinsburg, passed away Tuesday afternoon at Nason Hospital, Roaring Spring.
He was born near Martinsburg, son of the late Sanford and Lucy (Smith) Rhodes.
Surviving are two sisters: Gwendolyn Wareham and husband, Ronald, with whom he resided, and Elsie Steward and husband, Roy, of Martinsburg; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Herman; and four sisters: Beulah Hoover, Grace Edwards, Belva Detwiler and Pearl Brown.
While living in Huston Township, near Martinsburg, Elwood was a longtime farmer on his family's farm along Piney Creek. He was then employed at Hedstrom Corp., Bedford, for several years. He was a member of the former Smithfield Church of the Brethren, now Smithfield Church, rural Martinsburg.
Friends will be received from 2:30 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013, at John C. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Martinsburg, where a funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, 2013, Pastor George Searfoss officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.
