Lucy Elizabeth Palumbo, 101, Bethlehem, formerly of Altoona, died Monday peacefully in her sleep at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg surrounded by her family after a brief illness.
She was born in Clairton, daughter of the late Louis and Josephine M. (Borino) Vigliotti. She married Joseph J. Palumbo Sr. on June 22, 1935, at SS. Simon and Jude Catholic Church, Blairsville, and he died Nov. 22, 1995.
Surviving are five children: Joseph J. Jr. and wife, Isobel, of Orlando, Fla., Lucy "Dolly" Summers and husband, Phillip, of Bethlehem, with whom she resided, Joan D. Savine and husband, Ronald, of Altoona, Patty A. Palumbo and husband, Tony Edlin, of Spokane, Wash., and Barbara J. Davies and husband, Robert, of Deltona, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and a sister, Josephine Gallucci of Johnstown.
She was preceded in death by seven siblings: Alice Staff, Alphonse, Michael, Andrew, James and Anthony Vigliotti and Jennie Calabrese.
Lucy was a homemaker and childcare provider for many Altoona families for many years. Previously she had been a seamstress at the silk mill in Blairsville and the Altoona Silk Mill. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Altoona, where she was a member of the Christian Mothers.
Lucy enjoyed her children and grandchildren, baseball, especially the New York Yankees and Altoona Curve, bingo, Lawrence Welk, cooking and baking, playing rummy and fireworks.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013, at Jones Funeral Home, where a vigil for the deceased will be celebrated during the visitation. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21, 2013, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Altoona, Father David R. Rizzo officiating. Committal rites will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.
