An Altoona man is behind bars after allegedly burglarizing a Willow Avenue home in search of pain pills.
According to Altoona police, an 81-year-old woman was lying on her couch around 3:54 a.m. Wednesday and saw "a shadow on the wall coming down the stairs" of her home on the 200 block of Willow Avenue. The burglar fled out the back door and, initially it didn't appear as anything was missing, but police said relatives noticed the woman's prescription hydrocodone pills were missing and pointed police in the direction of a suspect: Ryan P. Vaughn, 23, of 219 Willow Ave.
Before calling 911, a grandson and another man walked to Vaughn's home and saw him going inside. The grandson also told police he heard Vaughn and his wife arguing about pills in the kitchen, an argument that spilled into the backyard where Vaughn was confronted.
"OK, I'll get them," Vaughn allegedly told the men after they told him they knew he had taken the pills. When police arrived at Vaughn's home, he was standing in the kitchen with the pill bottle in one hand and a knife in the other, police said. Vaughn dropped the knife after police, who were on the porch, ordered him to step outside, police said.
"Can I tell you something?" Vaughn allegedly said as he was handcuffed. "I stole the pills."
Police said Vaughn admitted to breaking into the woman's home in search of the pills, ones he knew were there because of a previous visit to the house.
Vaughn was charged with felony burglary and related charges and lodged in Blair County Prison in lieu of 10 percent of $40,000 bail.
