Robert V. Porta, 68, Altoona, passed away Tuesday at his home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Joseph Vincent and Thelma M. (Hillard) Porta. He married Constance L. "Connie" Finnegan on Nov. 28, 1963, at St. Mark's Catholic Church, Altoona.
Surviving are his wife; two children: Robert Vincent Porta Jr. and wife, Nisa, of Bellwood and Trista Elaine Porta and significant other, Mike McCready, of Bellwood; six grandchildren: Brandon, Ryan, Rachel, Nathanial, Dominic and Anthony; four great-grandchildren: Hunter, Noah, Quinn and Payton; and three siblings: Ronald J. of Altoona, Kenneth of Coral Springs, Fla., and Thelma Kopas of Hastings.
He was preceded in death by two grandchildren: Alex Vincent Della and Victoria Alexis Della; and four siblings: Betty Mitzik, Mary Flick, Linda Clark and Patricia Clark.
Robert was a high school graduate. He served in the U.S. Navy as a signalman third class during the Vietnam War. He retired in 2001 as a training sergeant with the Department of Corrections at the State Correctional Institution at Cresson with 18 years of service. He had previously worked as a storekeeper at SKF Industries Inc. with more than 17 years of service.
Robert had attended the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, a firearms instructor for the Department of Corrections and a past member of the Loyal Order of Moose. He enjoyed his children and grandchildren, woodworking and traveling.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2013, and from 9 until the 11 a.m. funeral service outside of Mass Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013, at Jones Funeral Home. Committal rites will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.
