Robert A. Melhorn, 87, Gallitzin, died Sunday at his residence.
He was born in Gallitzin, son of the late Ira and Madeline (Clossin) Melhorn. He married Mary Smith on Dec. 18, 1954.
Surviving are his wife; three children: Carol (Paul) Franjesevic of Niles, Ohio, Richard of River Falls, Wis., and Susan (David) Vincent of Gallitzin; five grandchildren: Billy (Rachel) Rickens, Jamie (Michael) Linger, Deena Vincent, Samantha (Randy) Ickes and Shelby Vincent; nine great-grandchildren: Courtney Linger, Kali Linger, Emily Linger, Natalie Linger, Megan Rickens, Ashley Rickens, James Rickens, Jacob Adams and Elizabeth Adams; and three siblings: June Bruce of Gallitzin, Patty (Ted) Dzielski of Glen Burnie, Md., and James of South River, N.J.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Shane Vincent, on June 14, 1998; and two brothers: William and Kenneth.
Bob was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. He was a life member of Gallitzin American Legion and a member of St. Demetrius Catholic Church, Gallitzin, Ashville VFW and Chest Springs Senior Citizens. He enjoyed playing pinochle.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013, at Gibbons Funeral Home, 301 Church St., Gallitzin, where a vigil service will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013, at St. Demetrius Catholic Church, Gallitzin, the Rev. Albert Ledoux as celebrant. Committal will be in St. Patrick Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded by Gallitzin American Legion and other local military organizations.
