Ethel B. Stephens, 95, of Altoona passed away Saturday evening at Golden Living Center-Hillview.
She was born in Huntingdon, daughter of the late William James and Clara Etta (Rutherford) Mountain. She married Wilford C. Stephens on May 18, 1943, in Montana. He preceded her in death on Jan. 1, 2013.
Surviving are a son, Jay Stephens and his wife, Judy, of Boydton, Va.; a daughter, Cheryl Lesch, and her husband, Earl, of Brackney; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Ethel was preceded in death by a brother, William Mountain; and a sister, Fay Lach.
Mrs. Stephens was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Altoona.
She was a 1936 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School and was also a 1940 graduate of Altoona Hospital School of Nursing.
Ethel volunteered as a nurse at the Sinking Valley Grange Farm Show for many years. She was employed as a registered nurse at Nason Hospital for four years and also worked as a private duty nurse.
Ethel enjoyed nature, especially watching and feeding birds.
She was an avid flower and vegetable gardener and always had a smile.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013, and 10:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Paula Schmitt officiating. Interment will be made at Greenwood Cemetery, Altoona.
