WILLIAMSBURG - With three seconds left in the first half from the Claysburg-Kimmel 8, Williamsburg's Austin McMonagle dropped back to pass.
The senior signal caller spun out of the grip of a Bulldog defender, rolled left and threw a perfect strike to Bryce Young near the front corner of the end zone for the score with no time left on the clock.
The play sent Williamsburg to the locker room up 22-0 and helped the Blue Pirates go on to a 40-8 homecoming win Friday at War Memorial Field.
"Austin is so athletic. He makes a lot plays," Williamsburg coach Bob Hearn said. "It was one of those situations where he created some extra time and made a real good throw. Bryce stayed with it, worked across the field and got open."
Williamsburg (4-3) tried to establish its running game early on, but after three straight possessions without a first down, the coaching staff went to the air, and it paid immediate dividends.
Three plays after a 26-yard completion to Young, McMonagle found the junior wideout open along with sideline for a 40-yard touchdown.
After Mike Biddle turned a botched extra-point into a successful two-point conversion, the Blue Pirates were ahead, 8-0.
McMonagle sparked the next drive as well with a 30-yard completion to Biddle and a 10-yarder to Young that gave Williamsburg a first-and-goal at the Claysburg 4. Caleb Morrissey finished the drive with a 1-yard dive on fourth-and-goal.
Claysburg took the ensuing kickoff and was driving late in the half when Morrissey intercepted a Conner Brown pass and returned it to the Claysburg 38 with just 21 seconds left on the clock.
One play later, McMonagle connected with Biddle for 30 yards, setting up the touchdown pass to Young that closed out the half.
"It's been a while since we've had a homecoming win," Hearn said. "It was a great team effort. We've had three tough weeks. We've struggled, but the guys came out and hit on all cylinders."
McMonagle completed 9-of-17 passes for 181 yards and three touchdowns. Young had four receptions for 84 yards and a pair of scores. Biddle had three catches for 97 yards.
Claysburg (2-5) got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter on a Logan Johnson 25-yard touchdown run. The Bulldogs were also stopped twice at the Williamsburg 1 late in the game.
"We're certainly able to move the ball. We just haven't been able to finish drives," Claysburg coach Gabe Walter said. "It's been a recurring problem this year. We'll get a drive going then lose focus and commit a penalty."
Johnson led the Bulldog rushing attack with 89 yards on 17 carries, and Brown finished with 74 yards on 21 carries. Evan Imgrund added 67 yards on six carries late in the game.
