EBENSBURG - Fans who braved the cold and rainy weather for Friday night's Bishop Guilfoyle at Central Cambria game were certainly expecting to see a potential classic.
With a Laurel Highlands Conference Section 1 title on the line, the Marauders brought a four-game win streak to Ebensburg to face a Red Devils team on a five-game win streak of its own.
But the potential classic turned into a classic beat down as Bishop Guilfoyle (5-2) raced to a 24-0 halftime lead and closed the night with a 30-6 win.
"One team came out ready to win a section title tonight and one team didn't, simple as that," CC coach Bill Corrente said.
"This is a second straight section title for us, and that is something we are pretty proud of. With all the traditional powers in this conference it's really something to be 5-0 in the section two straight years," said Bishop Guilfoyle head coach Justin Wheeler.
The Marauders offense, led by junior quarterback Brandon Chadbourn, didn't waste any time getting up and running. Chadbourn raced 47 yards on the game's first play from scrimmage and Bishop Guilfoyle marched the ball to the Central Cambria eight-yard line in just two plays. A pair of Marauder penalties followed by a Tanner Ambrisco interception near the goalline ended the drive, but Bishop Guilfoyle's physical tone had been set.
That interception would be the lone blemish in an otherwise perfect night for Chadbourn. On the next drive, Chadbourn capped off a five-play series with a 14-yard touchdown scamper.
On the subsequent Red Devils drive, Chadbourn made his presence felt on the defensive end, as he picked off a Will Seymour pass and raced 80 yards for his second score of the game.
"Chadbourn was a man amongst boys tonight, on both sides of the ball," said Corrente.
Chadbourn added a third touchdown on a five-yard run in the second quarter and finished the game with 150 of the Marauders 255 yards rushing.
"Once we saw the field and how muddy it was we knew it would be important to run the ball. My line was opening up huge holes all night and that's really what allowed us to win the game," said Chadbourn.
"We came into the game thinking we had to be balanced on offense, but obviously the weather kind of changed that. Brandon was able to really get into a groove early and that helped," said Wheeler.
Wheeler was also pleased with an offensive line that he says continues to improve.
"Brandon would be the first to tell you that the line was the key. These guys continue to improve each week and continue to gel," said Wheeler.
Adding to Central Cambria's issues was an injury to starting quarterback Will Seymour. The junior injured his ankle on the team's third offensive drive and missed much of the first half. In his absence the offense went backwards, totaling negative-four yards on two drives.
Seymour did return later in the half but was hobbled the rest of the game taking a valuable piece of the running game away from the Red Devils.
"Will has been battling a bad ankle for a few weeks now and losing him cuts into a big part of our offense. But his injury is not the reason we lost this game, Bishop Guilfoyle is a good team and they whipped us, the injury had nothing to do with that," said Corrente.
Central Cambria finally got some traction in the running game in the second half as Kerry Kirsch ran for 75 of his team-best 87 yards after the break. He punched in the team's only score with a six-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
Jared Verba kicked a 30-yard field goal and Sam McCloskey added a four-yard touchdown run to cap off the scoring for the Marauders who will look for their sixth straight win next Saturday at Westmont-Hilltop.
Central Cambria (5-2) will have to try to bounce back next week with another tough test as they travel to Bedford (5-2).
