John Howard Waite, 84, Martinsburg, went home to be with the Lord early Tuesday morning at UPMC Altoona after an extended illness.
He was born in Osceola Mills, son of the late Leroy Monroe Sr. and Verna Mae (Horton) Waite of Williamsburg. He was married to Dorothy G. Bousum on Oct. 14, 1950, at Williamsburg Episcopal Methodist Church by the Rev. William Snyder.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 63 years; a daughter, Susan E. Stern and husband, Jerry, of rural Martinsburg; a son, Philip J. and wife, Julie, of rural Roaring Spring; five grandchildren: Jason Stern (Megan), Gretchen Bettwy (Joe), and Jaraka, Victoria and Joshua Waite; two great-granddaughters: Evalyn and Ella Bettwy; a brother, Norman of Roaring Spring; and three sisters: Donna Mae Treese of Quarryville, Evelyn M. Forsythe of Tyrone and Peggy L. Metz of Martinsburg.
He was preceded in death by four brothers: Sheldon K., Harold R., Melvin R. and Leroy M. Jr.
John attended the Williamsburg area schools. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, serving with the Strategic Air Command in France for 16 years and attaining the rank of corporal. John began his employment career in 1945 in the meat/deli department at Wineland's IGA Foodliner, Martinsburg, and became manager of that grocery store for almost 40 years. He then was briefly employed at Riverside Markets in Williamsburg and Bellwood before retiring from Rhodes Meat Market, Martinsburg, in 1994.
He was a longtime active member of Martinsburg Grace Brethren Church, where he was a member and former president of the Berachah Bible Sunday school class and a former member of the deacon board for nearly 30 years, serving as head deacon for many of those years. He also formerly assisted with the youth program for many years, was head custodian for many years and formerly sang in the adult choir.
John was a life member of Bonner-Sollenberger American Legion Post 456, Williamsburg, and D. Merle Tipton VFW Post 43, Martinsburg. He was also a former member and past president of Martinsburg Ministerium and a former director of Fairview Cemetery Association.
He enjoyed being at home to spend time with his children, grandchildren and great-granddaughters, who were the delight of his life. He also enjoyed fishing, camping, traveling with family, including some memorable bus trips in his later years, redoing antique furniture, working in the outdoors, gardening and flower gardening, reading his Bible and good books and solving crossword puzzles. He was always willing to help anyone that needed help with a smile.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013, at Martinsburg Grace Brethren Church, where a funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 14, 2013, Pastors Robert A. Russell, Philip J. Waite
and Brian L. McCall officiating.
Interment with full military honors accorded by the Blair County Veterans Honor Guard will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be given to Martinsburg Grace Brethren Church or Target One Ministries.
