Alex Kulmatycki, 87, Hesston, formerly of Altoona, passed away Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at Westminster Woods at Huntingdon.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Steni and Anna Kulmatycki. He married Coleen Bordell in October 1950, daughter of the late Joseph and Marie (Kelley) Bordell.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years; a brother-in-law, Duane Bordell and wife, Carolyn; and two nieces: Barbara Lee (Richard) and Marlene Archey (the late Donald) and their families. He is also survived by his two Basset hounds, Sadie and Sallee, whom he worried about constantly.
He was preceded in death by a nephew, Eric Bordell.
Alex was a 1945 graduate of Altoona High School. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of WWII, serving in the 108th Division in Europe at the end of the war. He then attended Penn State University for two years at the Altoona campus under the G.I. Bill. He retired from Conrail in 1986 after 36 years of service as a freight conductor/brakeman.
After retirement, Alex enjoyed traveling, boating on Lake Raystown and working around his log home, which he took seven years to build. He enjoyed all of nature and everything concerning the environment and was an avid bird-watcher. He also enjoyed flower and tomato gardening and cooking for friends.
He was of the Protestant faith and firmly requested no viewing or service. He wanted everything as plain and simple as possible.
