FLINTON - From the very first offensive snap, the Tussey Mountain offense clicked on all cylinders Friday night against Glendale at Dr. Roy F. Baker Field.
Titan Darrin Sipes got loose for a 72-yard touchdown run on his squad's first snap from scrimmage, teammate Daniel Taylor scampered 62 yards for a score on the second play of the second drive, and Tussey Mountain was on its way to a 45-6 pasting of the host Vikings.
Taylor led the Titans with 161 yards and three touchdowns on just seven carries, Sipes added 126 yards on nine carries and Timothy Rankin nearly gave the Titans three 100-yard backs with 94 and a score.
Tussey Mountain gouged the Viking defense for 423 yards on the ground and added 128 through the air as it won the total yardage battle, 551-172.
"I wouldn't say we were completely satisfied," Tussey Mountain coach Josh Smith said. "After our first play and the second drive we kind of bogged down a little bit. Some of it was them, and some of it was us not executing. But it's hard to find things to harp about when you come out and run for that and throw for that.
"It's tough, but we still need to get better. We have a hard team to play next week in Juniata Valley. So we have to come focused and get ready."
Glendale got the opening kickoff and picked up a pair of first downs with hard-nosed running through the middle of the Titan defense, moving the ball to the visitors' 40 before a Wyatt Brumbaugh sack stopped the momentum to force a punt.
And then Sipes raced 72 yards to open the scoring and squash any momentum the Vikings had grabbed on their opening drive.
"We had a good first drive, one of our better ones we've had all year," Glendale coach Matt Irvine said. "And then one play for a touchdown is a huge momentum killer and a huge swing in the game. That is something we just can't have."
After surrendering two first downs to Glendale on the opening drive, the Titans only allowed two more the entire first half and limited the Vikings to only 41 yards of offense through two quarters, which pleased Smith and the coaching staff after last week's 56-30 win over Williamsburg.
"(Glendale) came out and punched us, and they got some first downs," Smith said. "Last week, we didn't play well defensively, and it kind of showed. So this week we focused on it at practice and said, 'Hey, we have to come out and get off the field on third down.' We had trouble with that last week.
"We need to keep getting better, but this was a pretty good defensive performance."
While the defense was getting off the field, the offense was lighting up the scoreboard.
Taylor's 62-yard jaunt gave Tussey a 14-0 lead after one quarter, and a pair of second-quarter scoring runs from him covering 3 and 73 yards put the Titans on top 27-0 at the half.
Tussey Mountain scored quickly in the second half, needing just 1:08 to march 52 yards with quarterback Quinn Barnett hitting Brumbaugh for a 31-yard strike to make it a 33-0 game.
Brumbaugh caught three passes for 79 yards, while Barnett hit five of his nine passes for 128 yards and the touchdown. He was also picked off by Glendale's Jon Rojas.
"We keep working on things," Smith said. "The other team may look at Darrin Sipes and think they need to shut him down. Or they may look at Dan Taylor and think they need to shut him down. They want to stop the run game, so we need to be multi-faceted and it will be very tough to stop us."
A Barnett interception on the next Viking possession set the Titans up at the 45, and Rankin scored three plays later from 34 yards out to up the lead to 39-0 and invoke the mercy rule.
Drew Sitch's 19-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter finished off the Titan scoring.
Glendale put together a 65-yard drive after the Sitch touchdown and scored when quarterback Tyler Potutschnig connected with Shea O'Donnell for a 12-yard touchdown as time expired.
"We have to give them credit," Smith said. "They're still fighting. I think they're a pretty young team."
