Lawrence R. Hesser Jr., 88, Altoona, passed away Wednesday at Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidaysburg, after complications due to diabetes.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Lawrence Sr. and Isabelle (Luther) Hesser. He married Frances K. Jeirles in Lock Haven.
Surviving are his wife; a son, Lawrence R. III (Rimma) of Cockeysville, Md.; two daughters: Lisa M. Lechner (Marty) and Victoria J. Hesser, both of Altoona; four grandchildren: Martin Lechner (Sara), Teresa Lechner, Alicia Taylor and Craig Taylor (Stephanie); a brother, Joseph of Altoona; and a sister, Nancy Greenleaf of State College.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Matthew "Buddy."
Lawrence was a graduate of Altoona Catholic High School and attended Naval Training School (Storekeepers) in Sampson, N.Y. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, serving as storekeeper aboard the Liberty ship Davy Crockett docked at Pier 29, San Francisco, Calif. He was a partner with his brothers in Hesser Brothers Inc., doing business as Country Garden Markets in Altoona and throughout central Pennsylvania.
Lawrence was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. He also belonged to the Catholic War Veterans, Park Hills Country Club, Blair County Chamber of Commerce and Navy League. He enjoyed golf and horse racing.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be concelebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church by Father James Coveney and Father Carl Spishak. Committal will be held at Calvary Cemetery.
