Deka Anne M. Smith, 89, Altoona, died Tuesday evening at UPMC Altoona.
She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Joseph N. and Margareta (Howard) Maddocks. She married Stewart W. Smith on Feb. 25, 1950, in Altoona, and he preceded her in death in 1964.
Surviving are a daughter, Sena Berkowitz and husband, Jerry, of Collegeville and their daughter, Sarah.
Deka Anne was a 1942 graduate of Altoona High School, attended Hood College in Maryland and was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. She retired as an elementary schoolteacher from the Altoona Area School District. She taught at various schools throughout the district, most recently at Adams and then Penn-Lincoln.
Deka Anne was a member of Altoona First Church of the Brethren. She enjoyed teaching Sunday school, and her church life was a very important part of her life. She was a member of the Blair County Historical Society and was a past regent and 50-year member of the Col. John Proctor Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of the Altoona Business and Professional Women's Club and Alpha Beta Kappa Women's Educational Sorority. She loved her dog, Abby.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona, and 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, at Altoona First Church of the Brethren, 510 Fifth St., Altoona, the Rev. Bill Pepper officiating. Interment will be made at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Altoona.
