Elizabeth Rose "Liz" Muhlbauer, 91, Burke, Va., formerly of Altoona, died peacefully Saturday of complications from congestive heart failure.
She was born in Munich, Germany, daughter of the late Alois and Mary (Leskowitz) Oberneder. She married Albert A. Muhlbauer Sr. on Dec. 15, 1943, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 3, 1974.
Surviving are three sons: Albert (Ruth) of Fairfax Station, Va., Frank (Deb) of Altoona and Joseph of Miami, Fla.; five grandchildren: Elizabeth Ann Velo (Chris), David Muhlbauer and Douglas Muhlbauer (Yoko), all in northern Virginia, Keith Muhlbauer (Christy) of State College and Joseph Muhlbauer in Colorado; six great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews in the Muhlbauer and Oberneder families.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Justin Muhlbauer; and five siblings: Alois Jr., John, Karl, Joseph and Theresa Oberneder.
Liz retired from Van Zandt VA Medical Center in Altoona in 1987 after more than 20 years of service. For the past 10 years, she resided in Burke, Va. She had been a volunteer at Altoona Hospital, making numerous hats and blankets for newborn babies.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, followed by a committal service at St. Mary's Cemetery, Altoona.
