Home Nursing Agency is offering hospice volunteer training for Blair County at The Healing Patch, 5416 Sixth Ave., Altoona, beginning on Oct. 23.
Opportunities for hospice volunteers include visits with patients, office work and bereavement support for families. Hospice volunteers provide support, relief and companionship for patients experiencing life-limiting illnesses and their families.
"I think I thought that it would be scary and I wouldn't know what to do or say to somebody, but in actuality, it's really just like being a friend," said Lisa German, Blair County hospice volunteer. "I feel honored and privileged to be a part of people's lives."
The first training session on Oct. 23 will be offered from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m., so those participating can choose the time that works best for them.
Volunteers receive mileage reimbursement, free flu shots and some other benefits.
Those who go through the training must have completed the volunteer application and screening process. The application can be completed online at www.homenursingagency.
