Bishop Carroll rebounds to shut out Rangers

September 14, 2013
By Patrick Hamilton - For The Mirror , The Altoona Mirror

SIDMAN - The Bishop Carroll Huskies picked up only 10 first downs but it was enough in a 16-0 shutout win over rival Forest Hills on Friday night at G.H. Miller stadium, home of the Rangers.

The Huskies came in looking to rebound after a disappointing 24-13 loss last week against Somerset and did so in style, giving up only 162 total yards while pitching a shutout against the Rangers.

Senior Tyler Janosik put the Huskies on top late in the first quarter by finding the end zone on a third-and-3 from the 4-yard line. That capped off a dominating quarter in which Bishop Carroll held the ball for more than nine minutes.

Forest Hills responded, and late in the second quarter was driving when two holding penalties on back-to-back plays negated long pass completions.

On third down, the Rangers fumbled the ball, leading to the second score of the night, a 31-yard field goal by placekicker Mark Dumm with just three seconds left in the half to put the Huskies up, 10-0.

The Rangers' best opportunity to score came midway through the third quarter, but they did not capitalize, going three-and-out from the Huskies' 9-yard line.

On fourth down the momentum would shift again as Joe Donoughe's field goal that would have put the Rangers within one score was blocked by Marty Lessard, who then scooped the ball up and returned it 36 yards near midfield.

"We just didn't execute tonight. We were in position to score a few times but just didn't come away with any points," a disappointed Rangers coach Don Bailey said.

Senior Brody Shuty also proved instrumental for the Huskies in capturing their second win of the season. Shuty caught three passes for 98 yards, including a 50 yard touchdown.

That score came directly after a high snap and block in the back resulted in a huge loss, knocking the Huskies out of the red zone and back to midfield early in the fourth quarter.

Huskies coach Greg Snyder said after the big win, "I tell all the guys, 'We enjoy the win tonight, but come tomorrow we turn the page.' ... We refocus and don't even speak of this game. Every game is a test, and our guys stepped up and passed this one tonight."

The Huskies (2-1) will host Penn Cambria (0-3) next week. The Rangers (2-1) will play Bishop Guilfoyle at Mansion Park.
