Carroll captures title

MURRAYSVILLE - The Bishop Carroll Catholic High School girls volleyball team won the Franklin Regional Tournament on Saturday to open the season.

The Lady Huskies beat Montour, 25-21, in the finals. In pool play, Carroll went 7-1, which got the team into the semifinals, where it beat Wilmington, 25-20.

Sarah Gomish led the Lady Huskies with 70 kills, while teammate Ellie Yahner added 30 kills, 34 service points and 13 digs. Nicole Woomer contributed 13 digs, while Janelle Gueguen added 120 assists. Rachel Kwisnek chipped in with 35 service points.

BG finishes second

NORTHERN CAMBRIA - Clarion defeated Bishop Guilfoyle, 27-25, in the finals of the Northern Cambria High School Volleyball Tournament.

Bishop Guilfoyle defeated Richland, 25-20, in the semifinals and topped West Shamokin, 25-16, in the quarterfinals.

The Lady Marauders went 7-1 in pool play, sweeping Bald Eagle Area, 25-22, 25-17, Penns Manor, 25-22, 32-30, and Cambria Heights, 25-12, 25-17. BG split with Kittanning, 21-25, 25-23.

Amy Dombrowski had 35 kills, 18 services points and 41 digs. Logan McIntosh added 38 digs, and Lindsie Welteroth notched 31 kills, 34 digs and 10 service points. Brynee Baughman contributed 17 digs, 30 service points and 69 assists for the runners-up.

Hollidaysburg lost in the second round of the Gold Bracket playoffs, despite 24 kills from Elizabeth Yacobucci and 16 service points from Rachel Sibold.

Altoona takes second

SLIPPERY ROCK - The Altoona girls made it to the finals of the Slippery Rock Invitational, only to fall to Knoch, 25-19, 25-15, in the championship match.

Andrea Parrish led Altoona with 42 service points, 38 digs and 26 kills, while Shannon Albright added 83 digs and Jenna Abram 28 service points. Amanda Parrish contributed 47 kills and 24 service points to go with 24 service points and 21 blocks from Emma Kreuz. Jaylyn Luciano contributed 17 service points, while Rachel Dibert added 14 blocks.

Altoona beat Eden Academy, Reynolds and Karns City to get to the playoffs, where it beat Elwood City and Redbank Valley on its way to the final.

A total of 16 teams competed in the tournament.
