Dustan D. Rhodes, 38, Hollidaysburg Veterans Home, died Monday evening at the home after a 10-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig's disease.
He was born in Altoona, son of Mark S. Rhodes and the late Michelle Anne (Schultz) Rhodes.
Surviving are his father and fiancee, Karen Clowson; his stepmother, Karen Kelley, who helped raise him; a daughter, Aarlyn R. Briscoe of Burlington, N.C.; a son, Eric P. of Hollidaysburg; two sisters: Jennifer L. Rhodes of Luthersburg and Chelsea Laret of Altoona; as well as many cousins, aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his mother on July 28, 2006.
Dustan was a 1994 graduate of Hollidaysburg Area Senior High School and had served in the U.S. Navy. He had been employed as a corrections officer at the State Correctional Institution at Huntingdon. He was a member of the Fort Fetter American Legion Post 516.
Dustan enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to the casino in New York and being with friends and family.
At Dustan's request, there will be no public viewing. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family.
