Wendell Byron Gahagan, 69, Martinsburg, graduated to glory Saturday night at Gilchrist Hospice Care, Columbia, Md., after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Roaring Spring, son of the late Byron W. and Virginia P. (Dilling) Gahagan. He married Gaylene A. Roberts on Aug. 15, 1969, in Nassau, The Bahamas.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 44 years; a son, Brian and wife, Jody, of Martinsburg; a daughter, Lisa Berg and husband, Scott, of Clarksville, Md.; five grandchildren: C.J., Connor, Cullen, Lauren and Mark; and numerous cousins.
Wendell was a 1961 graduate of Central High School, Martinsburg, and then received his bachelor's degree in secondary education, certified in mathematics, English and history, from Shippensburg University. He retired as a world cultures teacher from Central High School in 2006 after 39 years of service and had previously taught English for one year in New Jersey.
Wendell presently attended a Christian worship gathering in Tyrone. He formerly served as president of the Martinsburg Youth Baseball League and volunteered at The Village at Morrisons Cove, Martinsburg, and the local Boy Scout troops in the area. Known affectionately to his family, friends and community as "Moses," he enjoyed Bible study nights, reading and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 1 to 3 and 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, at Martinsburg Grace Brethren Church, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, with Fred Guyer, his friend, teaching colleague and brother in Christ, officiating. Private interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.
The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be given toward the Wendell Gahagan Community Service Award, c/o Altoona First Bank, 601 E. Allegheny St., P.O. Box 337, Martinsburg, PA 16662.
