Robert J. Zakrzwski Sr., 75, Cresson, went to his eternal reward Tuesday at Altoona Center for Nursing Care.
He was born in Aliquippa, son of the late Matthew P. and Clara (Sibis) Zakrzwski. He married Mary Ann Novotny on May 13, 1961.
Surviving are his wife; nine children: Robert Jr. (Deborah), Monica (Ted) Crum, Therese, Charles (Melinda), Raymond (Diana), James (Amy), David (Janet), Mary (Al-Amin) Bhuiyan and Richard; and 14 grandchildren: Sarah, Marielle, Rose and Peter, Thomas, Mark and Michael, Katherine and James, Asha, Zachariah, Nadia, Marissa, and Aidan.
He was preceded in death by two siblings, Dorothy Crocetti and Matthew Jr., and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Robert was a 1955 graduate of Lilly-Washington High School and a 1959 graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. He served as an ensign aboard the USS Oriskany. He was employed as a mechanical engineer for Otto Milk Co., Pittsburgh; Talon Inc., Meadville; R.D. Goss, Altoona; H.F. Lenz, Johnstown; and L.R. Kimball, Ebensburg, for more than 30 years until his retirement in 2002.
Robert was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, where he served on various committees. He and his wife, Mary Ann, were recipients of the Prince Gallitzin Cross Award in 2013. He was treasurer of Cresson Veterans Park for more than 30 years.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and uncle who loved gardening, watching the Pittsburgh Pirates and Penguins and doing crosswords, puzzles and Sudoku. He had a special gift of wit and humor.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Charles M. Kennedy Funeral Home, Cresson, where Legion of Mary will recite the rosary at 3 p.m., followed by a vigil for the deceased. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 16, 2013, at St. Aloysius Church by the Very Rev. Father John D. Byrnes. Committal will be in the church cemetery.
