Sister Mary Alphonsus Smith, 94, a member of the Mid-Atlantic Community of the Sisters of Mercy, died at Mercy Center on Friday evening. The former Rita Catherine Smith was born in Trenton, New Jersey, daughter of Ludwig and Catherine (Liebeck) Smith.
Sister is survived by her Sisters of Mercy and the staff at Mercy Center, and friends from Mount Aloysius. Sister was preceded in death by her parents.
Sister Mary Alphonsus graduated from Lancaster Catholic High School and received a Bachelor's degree in Latin from Misericordia University. Additionally, Sister received a Master's degree in Latin from Villanova University. She entered the Sisters of Mercy on Sept. 8, 1936, and professed her vows on March 12, 1937.
Sister taught in the diocese of Scranton, Harrisburg and Altoona-Johnstown. For most of her apostolic life, Sister was a member of the Faculty at Mount Aloysius College in Cresson and in later years assisted in the business office. In 2006, Sister came to Mercy Center, Dallas, and was an active member in the ministry of prayer. Sister had a quick smile which she gave freely to all she met.
Sister will always be remembered as a person who would graciously accept whatever came her way. In her time of illness, Sister was grateful for the good health she had experienced for years and the many persons she had met along her journey.
A prayer of welcome will be offered for Sister at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013, at Blessed Sacrament Chapel, Mercy Center, followed by visitation until 10:15 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at 4 p.m. at the Sisters of Mercy cemetery in Cresson. Arrangements are by Collins Funeral Home, Wilkes-Barre.
