Helen D. Hicks of Altoona died Thursday at her residence with her niece, Linda Gibson, at her side.
She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Julius Eldon (H.W.) and Mary Catherine (Winters) Hicks. She was a lifetime resident of Llyswen.
Surviving are several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and their families, including local nephew, John K. Hicks, and nieces, Patricia (Hicks) Frey and Linda (Hicks) Gibson.
She was preceded in death by three brothers: William Franklin, Alvin Luther and John Kenneth "Kenny" Hicks; two sisters: Edna Catherine (Hicks) Knoblach and Josephine Rodelle (Hicks) Longinotti; and three nephews: Gerald Knoblach, John Knoblach and Joseph David Hicks. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family of six.
Helen attended Baker School and was a 1934 graduate of Altoona High School. She was an Altoona Mirror carrier as a young girl in the Llyswen area. She was first employed at Curtis' Dairy Store, Plank Road, Gable's Department Store, Taylor Restaurant and Alberts Nursing Home. She was a member of Llyswen United Methodist Church and also belonged to the Ladies' Society of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen, Mountain City Lodge 91, Altoona.
Helen's favorite joys were picnics at Highland Park and cooking family meals. She was especially known for her fabulously delicious Chicken Boit Pie. She touched many family lives in time of need.
Friends will be received from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 12, 2013, in Stevens Memorial Chapel by Pastor Kathy Colebank. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery.
