Richard E. Hoffman, 58, Boalsburg, passed away Tuesday morning at Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College, with his partner, Mary Jane Johnson, by his side.
Surviving are his partner of 24 years; his father, Richard C. Hoffman of Altoona; two brothers: John N. and wife, Teresa, of Fort Pierce, Fla., and Douglas J. and wife, Tracy, of Altoona; and a nephew, Cody "Jack," and two nieces, Chelsea "Hazel" and Charley "Chippy," all of Altoona, whom he dearly loved and of whom he was so proud.
He is also survived by special aunts and uncles and many cousins, with one cousin in particular who called him every day.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Velda M., in April 2012.
Rick graduated from Altoona Area High School in 1973 and worked in the wholesale plumbing, heating and air conditioning industry for 25 years. During retirement, he took a part-time position with Penn State University's Guest Services at the Penn Stater. He worked with a wonderful team of people who all became good friends, and they supported him through his accident in May 2010 by sending him many cards, gifts and, most of all, prayers while at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital in Philadelphia. Upon his return home from the hospital, they continued with wonderful surprises and many visits. He cherished their friendship and was so hoping to return to work one day.
Rick and Mary Jane loved to travel, meeting through Collegiate Athletic Travel many years ago. After attending numerous Fiesta Bowls in Arizona, they formed a love of the Southwest, especially Scottsdale, and spent winter months there, where Rick played golf almost every day, which was his passion, and always looked forward to attending the Phoenix Open. They would then travel to Punta Gorda, Fla., where Rick would play golf with a dear friend, Kevin Brown, then on to Fort Pierce, Fla., to play with his brother, John. Rick would finish his winter golf outings by playing with a group of friends at a variety of courses throughout the South.
Rick was a member of Mountain Lodge 281, F&AM, and Jaffa Shrine, Altoona, and Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 1600, Boalsburg.
Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton St., State College, with a Masonic service at 7:45 p.m. A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug, 2, 2013, at Juniata Church of the Brethren, North Ninth Avenue and Third Street, Juniata, Pastor Robert Wharton officiating. Burial will be in Dry Hill Cemetery, Woodbury.
