Through the first two games of the Altoona Greater City Baseball League semifinal series between perennial power Conrad Chiropractic/Lilly American Legion and Mountain View Archery, the young Mountain View team had given the Lilly dynasty all that it could handle.
That ended on Sunday.
Lilly defeated Mountain View Archery 11-1 in six innings at Vets Field to head back to the City League Championship series against ProActive Sports.
Game one of the series between the league's top two finishers will take place tonight at Vets Field, starting at 6:15 p.m.
"We had a good series," Lilly player/manager Lucas McCoy said. "We're battle-tested. (The series) could have went either way, but I'm pleased with the effort."
McCoy should be.
The Lilly offense racked up fourteen hits. Landon Sinclair and Brock Porter each had three singles, and Brent Davison added a home run and three RBIs.
Lilly starting pitcher Matt Aungst managed the game well. He threw five innings, allowing just two hits, but walked seven batters before working himself out of jams in the second, third and fifth innings.
"You don't like falling behind in counts and putting runners on base like that," McCoy said. "But (Aungst) was able to get out of some jams and give us some breathing room for when we got to the plate. It's nice to pitch when you're ahead."
Aungst pitched from ahead after Lilly scored two runs in the second inning when Sinclair singled in Davison and McCoy scored on a fielder's choice by Porter.
Lilly was able to expand its lead in the third inning. Brandon Ickes walked to start the frame before Davison sent a home run over the left-center fence.
The lead ballooned to 8-1 by the bottom of the sixth inning, where Ryan Ickes and Cody Gallaher singles each drove in a run before Brandon Ickes' RBI single to center field ended the game at the 10-run rule.
Out of the 15 outs Aungst threw, 10 came from flyouts.
"(In game two) we had too many flyouts," McCoy said. "But (flyouts) are pretty hard to mess up, so we will take easy outs any day of the week."
Despite having eight baserunners via walk, Mountain View finished with just two hits - a Nate Clancy single in the first and an infield single by Dave McCloskey in the fifth.
McCloskey eventually scored his team's lone run, when Tyler Sweeney walked with the bases loaded.
"(Aungst) is their best pitcher," Mountain View Archery coach Dale Snyder said. "We gave them all they could handle the first two games and we had nothing to lose. We saw their best out here today, but you can't beat a team like that with two hits and one run. That's why they were 23-2 coming into today."
With a number of games in the last week, Mountain View was forced to use a trio of pitchers: Nick Smith, Sweeney and Josh Ebersole.
"We've had six games in eight days," Snyder said. "No one is that deep with pitchers. We had to use a good pitcher just to get here, but we're a young team and it takes time to build up."
Lilly moves on to the best-of-five championship series against ProActive Sports, while Mountain View ended its first season 7-16.
"The beginning of year, I wasn't sure what to expect," Snyder said. "I knew some of the players and didn't know some, but we came together to play baseball and do everything I thought we were capable of. I cant ask for anything else."
"Having 14 hits on the board is a good way to go into the championship," McCoy said. "I think it's everbody's goal to get there, but we wouldn't want to be anywhere else."
