Paul C. "Buzz" Shaffer, 84, Portage, died Saturday at Memorial Medical Center. He was born in Hooversville, the son of Paul Sr. and Mary (Sloan) Shaffer, who preceded him in death.
He is survived by his children: Rhoda (Bill) Gordon of Salix, Paul "Babe" III (the former Kathy Probert) of Portage, Jim (the former Carol McCabe) of Martindale, Colette "Cakie," (Rege) McCool of Portage, John "Bo" (the former Lori Vello) of Latrobe, Allen "Bouga" (the former Cindy Inman) of Latrobe, Richard "Ricko" (the former AnnetteScoran) of Portage, Glynnis "Glinnie" (Bob) Sherry of Ashville and Heather Ann "Heathie" (John) Pudliner of Johnstown.
Buzz will be sadly missed by his 20 grandchildren and his 20 great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by siblings: Gladys Rosa and Jean (Richard) Griffith, both of Johnstown, Anna Mae Vallee of Pittsburgh, William (Ruth) of Golden N.Y., Laverne (Fred) DePalma of Buffalo, N.Y., James (Bonnie) of Cheektowaga, N.Y., Edward (Sherry) of Portage, Phyllis (Frank) Lombardo of Richland and Lawrence (Roxanne) of Portage; a brother-in-law, Ken Moore; a sister-in-law, Helene Shaffer; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Roseann (Canavan) Shaffer; a son, Thomas "Bub"; two brothers: Raymond and Dale; and a sister, Judy Moore.
Buzz was a retired coal miner from Bethlehem Energy Mine 32 and the founder of Shaffer Tree Service.
He was an avid hunter and gardener who shared an abundance of vegetables with family and friends and was a charter member of "The Dog House," the Shaffer hunting camp.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Serenko-Claar Funeral Home, PC, Portage, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 30, 2013, with the Rev. Timothy Dietrich officiating. Committal will be in St. Bartholomew Cemetery, Wilmore.
