Eleanor Louise O'Brien, 89, of Tyrone died Thursday at her residence. She was born in New Cumberland, W.Va., daughter of the late George A. and Ruby (Steele) Bailey. She was married June 26, 1942, in Toronto, Ohio, to the Rev. Paul R. O'Brien.
She is survived by her husband, with whom she recently celebrated 71 years of marriage; two sons: Robert J. (Susan) of Tyrone and P. Samuel (Iva) of Carlisle; grandchildren: Bobbi Jo of Tyrone, Andy of Centerville, Va., Jenny Entler (Greg) of Mount Wolf, Joel (Mindy) of Mount Wolf and Jessica of Rahway, N.J.; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She attended elementary school in New Cumberland, W.Va., and was a 1941 graduate of Toronto High School. She graduated from Mount Aloysius College, Cresson, in 1972 with an associate's degree in nursing and was a registered nurse.
Eleanor had been employed in hospitals in Lakeland, Fla., DuBois, Wellsboro, Clearfield, Altoona and Epworth Manor.
She was an avid reader and loved to crochet and volunteer in activities at Epworth Manor.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, July 29, 2013, at Derman Funeral Home Inc., Tyrone, and one hour before the 10 a.m. service Tuesday at Grazierville United Methodist Church.
A Christian service of worship and celebration will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 30, 2013, at Grazierville United Methodist Church with the funeral sermon by the Rev. Dr. Kathleen Kind, district superintendent of the Altoona District of the Susquehanna Conference of the United Methodist Church. She will be assisted by the Rev. Peggy J. Bonsell. Interment will follow at Bald Eagle Cemetery.
