Hassell Lane Stere Jr., 93, Altoona, died Friday at UPMC Altoona after a brief illness.
He was born in Milesburg, son of Hassell L. and Verna (Baird) Stere.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Athleen; his former wife, Betty Geanne Erhard; five children: Patricia Sears of Washington Depot, Conn., Linda Stere of Nashville, Tenn., Peggy Oliva (Robert) of Smithtown, N.Y., Melody DeLozier (Stephen) of Hollidaysburg and Robert Stere of Altoona; and two stepchildren: David Bishop (Linda) of Pittsburgh and Deborah Crist (Steven) of Raleigh, N.C.
He is also survived by six grandchildren: Christopher Sears in Massachusetts, Megan Caldwell in Oregon, Julie DeSalvo and Eric Oliva in New York and Jesse and Deanna DeLozier of Hollidaysburg; five stepgrandchildren: Timothy Bishop in Arizona, Jonathan Bishop and Elizabeth Walkins of Pittsburgh and Lisa Crawley and Jeffrey Crist of Raleigh, N.C.; and three great-grandchildren: Connor Caldwell in Oregon and Paige and Miles Crawley in North Carolina.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Daniel Reeseman.
Hassell grew up in Altoona and was a 1938 graduate of Altoona High School. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII, where he was a pilot and taught flying to cadets in the Air Corps. He loved to fly. He also worked as a refrigeration mechanic and retired from Caum Engineering after many years of service.
Hassell was an avid reader, and he loved family activities.
He frequently attended concerts and theatrical performances.
At the request of the deceased, there will be no visitation or service. He will be buried in Grandview Cemetery.
