David Charles Riley, 82, Altoona, passed away Monday at his residence after an extended illness.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Charles and Wilhelmina (McIntosh) Riley.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Carol (McGirk); a son, David and wife, Trish, of Redondo Beach, Calif.; a daughter, Kim Riley Johnson and husband, William, of Houston, Texas; two grandchildren: Kate and Timothy Johnson; three siblings: James of Altoona, Joseph of Montrose, Calif., and Maureen of Ladson, S.C.; several nieces and nephews; and a cousin, Helen Marie Force.
David was a 1948 graduate of Altoona Catholic High School. He was a member of the Pennsylvania National Guard and was honorably discharged from active duty in 1951. After his military service and until his retirement, he was co-owner of Charles D. Riley Plumbing and Heating Inc. of Altoona, a family-owned corporation founded by his father in 1933.
David was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church (formerly St. Leo the Great). He was an active member of the Claysburg American Legion and a former member of Altoona Jaycees. In retirement, he enjoyed tending to his house and its grounds and doting on his grandchildren. He enjoyed nothing more than sharing his love of Pennsylvania and Civil War history with multiple generations of family and friends.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 11, 2013, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, July 12, 2013, at Our Lady of Fatima Church by Father James Zatalava. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery.
