Curve manager makes miscue

July 9, 2013

Minor league managers are developing, too, just like their players, and sometimes they make key mistakes.

Curve manager Carlos Garcia made one of those blunders Monday when he forgot to put Charlie Cutler's name on his lineup card, thereby making Cutler ineligible to play. The move didn't directly lead to the team's 7-6 loss to Erie, but things could have turned out differently had Cutler, one of the team's best hitters, been available.

"That was a mistake," Garcia said. "I thought I had him on the card, and he wasn't there."

The Curve and SeaWolves were tied at 6-6 in the bottom of the eighth inning, and Garcia called on Cutler to pinch hit with a runner at first and one out. The umpires noticed Cutler wasn't listed on the lineup card submitted before the game, so he was not allowed to hit.

Instead, Justin Howard pinch hit, and he was hit by a pitch. The Curve couldn't produce a run, though, and Cutler, who's hitting .302, never had a chance to contribute.

"I was just ready to go, business as usual," Cutler said. "It was a little surprising, but those things happen. Sometimes weird stuff happens."

Fact Box

Time for a break

The Curve are off for two days, but five players will be heading to New Britain for Wednesday's EL All-Star Game: RHP Jameson Taillon, RHP Casey Sadler, RHP Ethan Hollingsworth, 2B Jarek Cunningham and 3B Adalberto Santos. Cunningham will take part in the home run derby.

Garcia said he realized he probably had made the mistake as soon as the umpires started examining the lineup card.

"You have to pay more attention to those things," Garcia said of what he learned. "It might be the last time it happens, but you've just got to pay a little bit more attention, make sure your bench coach oversees that and a lot of people oversee that."
