Rose B. Steinman, 94, formerly of Altoona, died peacefully and with dignity Monday, July 1, 2013.
Surviving are two great-nephews: Jeremey and wife, Fran, and Liam Newberg; a niece, Teri Cieri; three nephews: Frank Barnet and wife, Eve, Ted Steinman and wife, Carol, and Joe Steinman and wife, Jennifer; three great-nieces: Amy Grau, Jennifer Womack and Julie Barnet and their children, Allison Rose, Rachel, Cole, Annie Francis and Zoe; and two great-great-nieces: Jessica and Sofia Newberg.
Rose was born in 1919 and grew up in the Feltonville neighborhood of Philadelphia, where she could hear the rumble of the trackless trolleys barreling down Wyoming Avenue.
Rose B. Steinman
She attended the St. Luke's and Children's Hospital nursing training program in Philadelphia.
In 1959, she moved to Altoona to take a nursing job at the Veterans Hospital.
She subsequently worked at Altoona Hospital and then at GTE Sylvania as an industrial nurse, retiring in 1984 after 25 years of service. In retirement she volunteered at Altoona Hospital.
Rose, her roommate, Dorothy "Dutch" Snyder, and her dogs, Heidi I and II and Alica, created a home that welcomed their friends and family with love.
She and friend Kate Hoffman enjoyed their road trip and shopping adventures.
If part of the American character is to look after and care for your family, friends and neighbors, then Rose deserves a Presidential recognition. For current and returning residents of Altoona, you simply had to stop by and visit with Rose and catch up.
She loved her card games, a good salty joke and Christmas.
She would not let you leave her home hungry. When a family member or friend was sick, Rose was steadfast, on call by your bed.
Her care protocol was part medical, part prayer and part non-stop messing so that you had no choice but to get better. If you needed some help and/or guidance, you could ask Rose to pray on your behalf.
She would declare, "God hears my prayers, and you must pray as well!" So very often her prayers were answered.
Her dear friends, Linda, Mac, Peggy, Shirley, Leslie, Dood, Val, Verne, Red, Chris and Ellie, and the Simpson-Temple United Parish community will remember her with love.
Friends will be received from 3 until the 4 p.m. funeral service and celebration Sunday, July 7, 2013, at Simpson-Temple United Parish, 2212 Sixth Ave., Altoona, the Rev. Denise Arpino officiating. Interment will be made Monday, July 8, 2013, at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery. At the funeral, all friends are welcome to share a memory of Rose.
In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to Simpson-Temple United Parish. Arrangements are by Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona.
