Ray H. Hoover, 94, Homewood at Martinsburg, formerly of Bellemead, died Saturday at Homewood.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Frank G. and Bessie (Murphy) Hoover. He married Dorothy Lee Lewis in Warrick County, Va., and she preceded him in death on Dec. 14, 2012.
Surviving are his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary Jane and Dick Riedel; numerous nephews; and a niece. He was preceded in death by three brothers: Ard "Jackie," Robert and Frank.
Ray was a graduate of Altoona High School and Penn State University. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, attaining the rank of machinist's mate second class.
He retired from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry and had previously taught school in the local area. Before that time, he had been employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad locally and in Chicago, Ill., in the test department.
Ray was a member of the former Third Presbyterian Church, Altoona, where he served as deacon, elder and clerk of session. He was a member of Logan Lodge 490, F&AM, Altoona, for more than 60 years. He was an avid reader, particularly of books dealing with histories of both WWII and the Civil War, and had visited many battlefield sites in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland and South Carolina.
Friends will be received from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Monday, July 8, 2013, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m., the Rev. Dr. Richard Riedel officiating. Interment will be made at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.
