John Walker Walls, 74, Duncansville, went to be with the Lord on Thursday evening as a result of a drowning accident while fishing at Raystown Lake. His family is comforted by knowing he died doing what he loved and "he ran into the arms of Jesus with his boots on."
He was born in Foot of Ten, Duncansville, son of the late Howard and Jean (Walker) Walls.
Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Kathleen (Buchanan); his brother, Donald Walls of Altoona; his children: Jennifer Maher (Steve) of Duncansville, Jason (Billie Jo) of Hollidaysburg, Kristina Walls of Ocean City, Md. and Kimberly Knight (Chad) of Key West, Fla. He was the proud grandfather of Danielle Fry (Barry), Steven and Michael Maher, Jacob, Calob, Colton and Campbell Walls, Dustin Flemming and Jayce Knight. He had special nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his lifelong friend, Bob Plowman.
John was retired and had a number of trades: window washing, carpentry and truck driving. He was an avid sportsman and athlete. He wrestled for Hollidaysburg Area High School and continued into his later years with the Old Timers. He was in the Marine Corps. He loved to hunt, fish, hike and play billiards.
John enjoyed hanging out at Smokers Express where he would chat with willing listeners. He always had a story to tell and an interesting fact or two. He loved to watch his grandsons wrestle and to take his grandchildren hunting and fishing. Teaching people new things, building or fixing things and learning about history were his hobbies.
John was a born-again Christian and attended Berean Baptist Church in Duncansville. He was a member of Frankstown Sportsman's Club, the Blair County Tea Party and the NRA.
He spent a lot of time with his friend Pete Steiner. He loved dogs and could be seen driving around with his current dog, Lady.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Liebegott-Brown Funeral Home Inc., Fourth Ave., Duncansville, and 10 to the 11 a.m. funeral service with military honors on Monday, June 24, 2013, at Berean Baptist Church, Mill Road, Duncansville, with Pastor Barry Fry officiating. Interment will be at Presbyterian Cemetery, Hollidaysburg.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy can be made to the family.
