Raymond L. Buck, 89, Altoona, died unexpectedly Friday at his residence. He was born in Gallitzin, son of the late John E. and Lucy S. (Litzinger) Buck. Raymond married Louise M. Wyland on June 20, 1950, at St. Patrick Church in Gallitzin. She preceded him in death on March 16, 2010.
Surviving are a daughter, Marilyn L. Kelley and husband, Patrick, of Altoona; seven siblings: Harold J. (Leona) of Akron, Ohio, Dorothy A. Buck of Altoona, James A. (Lois) of West Mifflin, Janet L. Rex (John) of Tonawanda, N.Y., Donald P. (Lois) of West Mifflin, Wayne T. (Pauline) of Altoona and Gerald A. (Bonnie) of Altoona; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Raymond Ronald Buck; and seven siblings: John E. Jr. (Marian), Stella M. Lawn (Charles), Esther M. Clark (Melvin), Robert F. (Helen), Walter C. (Virginia), Richard A. (Geraldine) and Mary Jean Mirovich (Ronald).
Raymond was a 1941 graduate of Gallitzin High School and was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII serving in the South Pacific, specifically in the Philippines. He retired in 1988 as a solderer from PPG Industries Inc. after 15 years of service. Previously Raymond worked for the PRR and Penn Central for many years. He enjoyed carpentry work and crossword puzzles.
Raymond was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and the American Legion in Gallitzin.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, June 17, 2013, at E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home Inc., 2309 Broad Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery.
