Miriam Josephine (Smith) Ickes, 87, Houston, Texas, died June 3, 2013.
She was born in Blair County, the fourth child of Harvey and Margaret (Withers) Smith.
Surviving are a daughter, Cynthia Lutz and husband, Lowell; a grandson, Wayne Lutz and wife, Jillian; two great-grandchildren: Andy and Evie; a sister, Phyllis Jones; a nephew, Eric Miller; and numerous other nieces and nephews and their children.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters: Nancy Smith, Janet Stifter and Margaret Miller.
Miriam was a 1943 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School, after which she went to work for the Philadelphia Inquirer. She married Charles William "Bill" Ickes Jr. on July 26, 1946, two months after they met. Shortly after, they moved to New Jersey, then to Phoenix, Ariz., where their only child, Cynthia Jean, was born. They were married almost 40 years when Bill passed away in 1986.
Miriam spent most of her employed days as a banker, retiring in 1989 from First Interstate Bank of Arizona. She moved with her sister, Peggy, to Las Vegas, Nev., in 1996. In 2012, she moved to Houston, Texas, to be with her daughter and her family. She made her final move to heaven on June 3, 2013.
Interment was in Veteran's National Cemetery in Phoenix, Ariz. Arrangements are by Integrity Funeral Care, Houston, Texas.
