With more than 30 years of success to show for it, the Hollidaysburg Area YMCA Women's Summer Basketball League has established itself as one of the premier ventures of its kind.
But that doesn't mean it isn't always looking for ways to get better.
The loop will open for its 32nd season today with 10 games on the docket and several adjustments from previous years, including an all-time high 21 teams in the circuit.
Altoona Area High School, which always has had two entries in years past, will only have one team in the league this year. However, there are four new teams in the league's High School Division, including Forest Hills, which is part of the schedule for the first time. Penn Cambria, Bishop Carroll and Westmont Hilltop are coming back to the league after varying absences.
Bishop Guilfoyle, Bellwood-Antis, Tyrone, Cambria Heights and Hollidaysburg, the 2012 champion, also will be represented in the High School Division.
There'll be three new entries in the Alumni Division, as well, including an AAU team from the Johnstown area and a Mount Aloysius College team, along with three returning squads under new sponsorship.
"We are very excited about the new teams that will be joining us this summer," league director Stefanie Hinton said. "Many are traveling from a variety of different areas which we think will only add to the competition of the league."
Defending Alumni Division champion Mitch Grace Construction is back, too.
Grace Construction plays in one of the very first games of the new season when it tips off at 3 p.m. against Rik-n-Niks/Allegheny Belting (Bishop Carroll). The 3 p.m. start time is a couple of hours earlier than typical starts from other years.
"This year, we will start the games a little earlier on Sunday afternoons to avoid using the old gym," Hinton said. "Tuesday and Thursday times will remain the same as from the previous years. This summer, all games will be played on the two courts in the new gym.
"There are a few teams that will play double-headers on certain days. This was a request by the specific teams to cut down on their traveling time."
The regular season will run through Aug. 6 with the division championships scheduled for Aug. 11. The league will announce the winner of its annual Lynnette Williams Spirit Award on July 21.
