Ralph Ewing "Pap" Rhule, 89, formerly of Altoona, died Wednesday afternoon at the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Leo Roller and Mary Bell (Straesser) Rhule. He married Winifred Louise Kincaid on Sept. 30, 1946, in Winchester, Va., and she preceded him in death in 2002.
Surviving are two children: Jacquelyn D. Close and husband, Judd, in South Carolina and Ralph Edward of Altoona; four grandchildren: Matthew Rhule, Benjamin Rhule, Jennifer (Close) Mincel and Jonathan Close; seven great-grandchildren: Nicholas, Madison, Dyllian, Gauge, Gwen, Abigail and Liam; several nieces and nephews; and his loyal companion, Verna Mills.
Ralph was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Kathie Elaine; and two brothers: Harold and Albert.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during WWII and Korea and attaining the rank of seaman first class. He retired as a supervisor from A&P in 1975 after 37 years of service, and he was a member of Greenwood United Methodist Church.
Ralph was also a member of Mountain Lodge 281, F&AM; Harrisburg and Altoona Consistories; Jaffa Shrine, where he was past president of the Jaffa Clowns and was known to all as "Pap" the clown; and Chief Logan Forest 131, Tall Cedars of Lebanon. He was a life member of the Bavarian Aid Society, VFW and Howard Gardner American Legion Post 281, Tyrone.
He loved his dogs and enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and farming at George and Pat Snyder's Loysburg Farms.
Friends will be received from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 8, 2013, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona, followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m., the Rev. Joe Fleck officiating. Interment will be made at Rose Hill Cemetery, Altoona.
