ROARING SPRING - A shake-up and no raises in the coming year await Spring Cove administrators under a plan adopted by the school board.
Board President Jeff Brennecke was scheduled to sign a 2013-16 statement of benefits Tuesday evening that details the administrative reorganization while addressing pay raises and tenure over the next three years. No administrators will receive a pay increase for the coming school year.
The plan creates some new positions while leaving others vacant.
Officially taking effect July 1, the new policy eliminates a high school assistant principal position, and an elementary school principal's job is being replaced by an assistant elementary principal.
Under the plan, a primary elementary principal will work at the main Spring Cove campus, while the assistant will cover Martinsburg Elementary, Clark said.
A new districtwide job - assistant principal for pupil personnel services - will oversee guidance programs and student-service contracts.
Stephanie Thompson, Central High School assistant principal and a possible candidate for the pupil services opening, said Wednesday that she has declined a shot at the newly created job. With her current position set for elimination, Thompson said she has asked the board to consider other jobs for her.
Among the administrative changes, a decision to combine the longstanding athletic-director position with a newly created dean of students job has stirred particular opposition in the Spring Cove athletic community. Typically responsible for student discipline, the new dean's job would likely require a teaching certificate - something athletic director Chuck Gojmerac doesn't have.
"I'm going to apply for whatever new position is created," Gojmerac said Tuesday, noting that he'll seek an emergency teaching certificate to keep his job.
During a sometimes-contentious meeting on Thursday that included the administration vote, cross country coach Ray Brooks hailed Gojmerac's help.
"If I need Chuck Gojmerac, I hit the speed-dial on my phone and I get an answer," Brooks said. "He is 10 times better than any athletic director I have been around."
Clark said the new positions for athletic director/dean of students and pupil personnel services soon will be advertised for in-house applicants. The search could later expand outside the district, he said.
The assistant elementary principal's position will also be open, Clark said, as veteran principal Jeanne Hileman announced her retirement last month.
Alongside the new administration agreement is a three-year plan for support staff, a broad group that includes cafeteria workers, custodians and aides, among others. Approved unanimously on Thursday, the agreement places salary caps on support jobs and updates scheduled raises over the next three years.
It also creates a new position that would manage enrollment reports and state filings. Superintendent Robert Vadella said in April that his secretary, Kim Moyer, would take up the job at a $40,000 salary.
