Helen Jean Fields, 90, The Villages, Fla., formerly of Bellwood, died Saturday afternoon at The Villages.
She was born in Bellwood, daughter of the late John A. Stephens and Ethel (Cramer) Stephens Cory and stepdaughter of W. Clinton Cory. She married Wallace E. Fields on Dec. 4, 1943, in Bellwood, and he preceded her in death in 1983.
Surviving are a daughter, Shelley G. (William S.) Van Atta of The Villages, Fla.; a son, Duke E. Fields of Largo, Fla.; three grandchildren: Kerry (John) Van Atta-Benevides of Winnetka, Ill., Jamie (Kurt) Van Atta Eberle of Chesapeake, Va., and Ashley E. Fields of Largo, Fla.; six great-grandchildren: Alexa, Nicholas and Sophia Benevides and Landon, Noah and Peyton Eberle; four sisters-in-law: Ruth Burkholder and Kay Cory, both in Maryland, Alice Stephens in Brazil and Patricia Cory in Pennsylvania; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers: Richard W. Stephens and C. Wayne and Barry L. Cory.
Jean was a 1940 graduate of Bellwood-Antis High School and a 1944 graduate of Capital City School of Nursing, Washington D.C. Upon returning home, she worked as a registered nurse for many years in the Altoona area. In 1969, she graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and for the last 20 years of her career, she worked as a nurse for the Altoona Area School District. After retiring in 1985, she spent her later years living in Florida, South Africa and Wisconsin with her family.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 7, 2013, and 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Saturday, June 8, 2013, at Jon C. Russin Funeral Home, Bellwood, the Rev. Ralph Hamer officiating. Interment will be at Logan Valley Cemetery, Bellwood.
