Francis Xavier Simmons, 68, Altoona, formerly of 200 Fourth Ave., died unexpectedly but peacefully Wednesday at his residence.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Marie Simmons. He was raised in the family home of his late grandparents, Samuel and Mary Josephine Simmons. He married Danis Temofonte on Oct, 28, 1978, at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona.
Surviving are his wife; three cousins: Maryann Hess, Charles Simmons Jr. and Donald Simmons, all of Lancaster, and their seven children; and many friends, including Ryan Ross and Philip Rhone.
He was preceded in death by an uncle, Charles Simmons Sr.
Frank was a 1962 graduate of Bishop Guilfoyle High School and a graduate of Penn State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in education and political science. He retired as a 4-H youth nutrition education agent from the Penn State University Cooperative Extension Office after 26 years of service. He had previously worked at the Office of Economic Opportunity, where he was a youth worker and later assistant director of the agency, and had been a playground director for the Central Blair Recreation and Park Commission at various city parks.
Frank was a member of St. Mark's Catholic Church, where he attended the grade school. He was currently serving on the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission, where he served as Blair County Commission Secretary. He was a past president of the Pennsylvania 4-H Association, past president of the Community Action Agency Board of Directors and a member of the Blair County Health and Welfare Council.
His primary interests were traveling, particularly by train, and collecting train memorabilia. He also loved gardening, was an avid reader and enjoyed discussing politics.
Friends will be received from 9 to 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona. A funeral service will be held at noon Tuesday in Stevens Memorial Chapel by Father Ronald Osinski. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery.
