Former Penn State quarterback?Steven Bench announced Thursday on his Twitter account that he is transferring to South?Florida.
Bench can play immediately without having to sit out one year, under the NCAA's relaxed transfer rules as part of Penn State's sanctions. He hopes to be able to compete for the starting quarterback job with the Bulls.
Bench, who backed up Matt McGloin last season as a true freshman at Penn State, competed with JUCO transfer Tyler Ferguson during spring drills. Nittany Lions coach Bill O'Brien informed Bench he would not be receiving first-team reps once incoming freshman Christian Hackenberg arrives, so Bench decided to transfer.
Bench, a Georgia native, had been looking at teams in the South and picked South Florida over Mississippi State.
Ferguson and Hackenberg will compete for the Lions' starting quarterback job this season. Hackenberg is expected to arrive on campus shortly after graduating from high school.
