NEW?PARIS - Chestnut Ridge's Jennifer Carthew was nervous facing Bedford for the third time this season.
But then the Lady Lions' bats came alive, and Carthew's nerves clearly went away as she threw a one-hitter to launch No. 1 seed Chestnut Ridge into the District 5 Class AA championship game after a 12-0 win over No. 4 seed Bedford in 4 innings.
"It was a little nerve-racking," the sophomore said. "Because you are thinking, 'they've seen me before. They are going to hit me better.' Once you go out there, you've got to think with a 'they're-not-going-to-hit-me' attitude, and shut them down."
Shut them down, she did, striking out five and allowing one hit to Bedford pitcher Ashley Rose in the fifth inning with no outs.
"She has pitched every game against Bedford," Ridge coach Chuck Corle said. "This is her third time they saw her. She shut them down pretty good all three games. We were confident in that."
Offensively, the Lady Lions had an offensive explosion in the first inning, batting around the order and scoring six runs on six hits. All of the hits came with no outs.
Rose was able to get out of the inning with three consecutive strikeouts to get out of the inning.
However, Ridge's bats couldn't be held at bay, scoring runs in every inning the Lady Lions batted.
Stephanie Deaner and Kenzie Bowser both went 3-for-3, each knocking in two runs and each scoring two runs. Mackenzie Feather added two hits, a run and knocked in another as well. Josie Neatrour went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs.
"It made me relax a lot more," Carthew said. "Because I'm like 'we are hitting the ball.' It allows me to relax a little bit more, and let my pitches do the work."
Bedford, a young team according to coach Rick Leonard, struggled to muster any kind of offense.
"[Carthew] definitely takes control of the mound at times," Leonard said. "She's not an overpowering pitcher, but she's smart. We weren't real aggressive in the batter's box. We've got to be a little bit more aggressive, more relaxed in there."
The Lady Lions will take on second-seeded Everett next Wednesday for a shot at another title in the District 5 Class AA final.
"We know it's going to be a tough game," Carthew said. "I just hope we do what we've done in the past, and come out on top."
