Elizabeth J. "Betty Joyce" Gegenfurtner, 80, Altoona, died unexpectedly Sunday at Altoona Regional surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late John and Bertha (Reilly) Gibson. She married Walter R. Gegenfurtner on Aug. 25, 1956, in Altoona, and they enjoyed a full life together for 56 years.
Surviving are her husband; three sons: Joseph W. and Andrew G., both of Jersey City, N.J., and Matthew and wife, Tricia, of Long Valley, N.J.; three grandchildren: Matthew, Emma and Nicole Reese; a brother, John Gibson and wife, Patty, of Altoona; two sisters: Johann Shade and husband, Tom, of Washington, Pa., and Mary Alice Conte and husband, John, of Altoona; a brother-in-law, Harold McConnell; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sisters: Christina Gibson and Kathleen McConnell.
Betty was a 1951 graduate of Altoona Catholic High School. She retired as a manager from Goodman Furniture Store, Jersey City, N.J., and was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Altoona. She was also a member of the Mothers Guild, where she served as president, vice president, treasurer and recording secretary, and a member of the PTA of Hudson Catholic High School. She ran the school library at St. Aedan School in Jersey City, N.J.
Betty enjoyed reading and playing cards.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 17, 2013, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 18, 2013, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church by Monsignor Michael Servinsky. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery.
The family suggests that contributions in her memory be made to the Friends of the Altoona Area Public Library, 1600 Fifth Ave., Altoona, PA 16602.
